Over 70% of new buses in India will be an EV by 2030

According to Union minister Nitin Gadkari on Friday, the government plans to have EV sales penetration of 30% for private automobiles, 70% for commercial vehicles, and 80% for two- and three-wheelers by 2030 due to the urgent need to decarbonize the transportation sector.

Gadkari said that India will be able to cut its use of crude oil by 156 million tonnes, or Rs 3.5 lakh crore if electric vehicles reach a penetration rate of 40% in the market for two-wheelers and automobiles and close to 100% in the market for buses by 2030.

Speaking at an event hosted digitally by industry group FICCI, he said that the transportation sector needed to be decarbonized right now in order to be sustainable from an economic, ecological, and environmental standpoint.

The minister of roads and road transportation noted that, as part of the EV mission, NITI Aayog motivated 25 states to develop EV policies, 15 of which have already made their state EV policies public.

Gadkari added, "Globally, India has the biggest rail-line length and the second-largest road network, which carry millions of passengers and tonnes of products every day. Transportation plays a key part in a country's overall growth." He stated that his ministry is concentrating on the construction of effective and inexpensive public transportation systems such as metro rail, fast rail transit, mono-rail, BRT, intra and intercity bus services to meet the daily transportation demands of a sizable population.
