India Embarks on Hydrogen-Powered Future: Testing Dozens of Trucks and Buses on Its Roads

India is shifting gears towards a greener future. In a bold move under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, the country has launched five groundbreaking pilot projects aimed at testing hydrogen-powered commercial vehicles. A fleet of 37 trucks and buses—15 equipped with hydrogen fuel cells and 22 utilizing hydrogen internal combustion engines—will soon hit India’s roads, navigating ten key routes across the nation.

Hydrogen Hits the Highway: The Key Routes

These cutting-edge vehicles won’t just be confined to a single testing ground. Instead, they will traverse major transport corridors, covering diverse terrains and climates. The designated routes include:

  • Delhi – Agra – Greater Noida: Bustling urban landscapes meet high-speed expressways.
  • Ahmedabad – Vadodara – Surat: Gujarat’s industrial backbone, a crucial testing ground.
  • Pune – Mumbai: A vital connection between India’s financial hub and its growing tech city.
  • Jamshedpur – Kalinga Nagar: An industrial-heavy route, testing hydrogen’s resilience in heavy-duty transport.
  • Bhubaneshwar – Konark – Puri: Coastal highways where hydrogen technology will face humid conditions.

And that’s just half the story. Additional routes in Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, and Gujarat will ensure a comprehensive evaluation of hydrogen-powered transport across varying geographies. To support this initiative, nine dedicated hydrogen refueling stations will be strategically established.

The Powerhouses Behind the Project

This initiative isn’t just a government endeavor—it’s a collaborative effort, bringing together some of India’s biggest industrial giants:

  • Tata Motors & Ashok Leyland – Leaders in India’s commercial vehicle sector, ready to revolutionize trucking.
  • Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) & NTPC – Driving clean energy innovations forward.
  • IOCL, HPCL & BPCL – Oil giants pivoting toward hydrogen infrastructure.
  • ANERT (Agency for New and Renewable Energy Research and Technology) – Ensuring technological viability and efficiency.

With ₹208 crore ($25 million) in government funding, the pilot projects are not just experiments—they’re stepping stones to a hydrogen-fueled transportation revolution.

Why Hydrogen? The Push for Clean Commercial Transport

India’s commercial transport sector is one of the biggest contributors to emissions. Diesel-powered trucks and buses dominate the roads, guzzling fuel and pumping pollutants into the air. Hydrogen, a zero-emission alternative, could be the game-changer the industry needs.

  • Fuel Cell vs. Internal Combustion: While fuel cell vehicles (FCEVs) generate electricity through hydrogen, internal combustion hydrogen engines burn the gas directly—both producing zero tailpipe emissions.
  • Faster Refueling, Longer Range: Unlike battery electric vehicles, hydrogen trucks can refuel in minutes and travel longer distances.
  • Energy Independence: As India ramps up its green hydrogen production, reliance on imported fossil fuels could decrease significantly.

The Road Ahead: What’s Next?

The next 18 to 24 months will be crucial. These hydrogen-powered commercial vehicles will be rigorously tested for performance, efficiency, and economic viability. The government and industry leaders will assess:

How well do hydrogen trucks and buses perform in real-world conditions?
Is the fueling infrastructure robust enough for large-scale adoption?
What are the long-term cost benefits compared to diesel-powered vehicles?

Tata Motors has already signaled its intent to begin commercial sales of hydrogen-powered trucks within a year or two, setting the stage for a monumental shift in India’s transportation landscape.

Conclusion: A Hydrogen-Powered Future?

India is not just testing hydrogen vehicles—it’s laying the foundation for an entirely new transportation ecosystem. If these trials prove successful, we could see a future where hydrogen-powered commercial vehicles become the norm, reducing emissions and reshaping the logistics industry.

The road ahead is long, but with hydrogen in the tank, India is driving straight into a cleaner, more sustainable future.
