Independent drivers and operators don’t get fuel costs covered in their job unless they work for a top-class trucking company. Especially with the rapidly rising fuel costs, it's inevitable for independent drivers to stay away from paying hefty money on fuel charges to deliver goods far distance. 1. Maintain a speed:

First and foremost, what you should understand is that revving the engine at higher RPMs and shifting gears unnecessarily will affect the fuel efficiency of the truck. It's always a good practice to follow the speed limit to ensure better fuel efficiency. Maintaining a speed and reducing braking frequency will help you save lots of money on fuel.

  1. Anticipate traffic patterns:

Next, if you are in traffic with lots of vehicles ahead of you, then try to maintain a distance so that you can keep the truck moving. Stopping the truck and then taking off will make the truck consume more fuel so it's best that you keep the vehicle rolling. Also, it's a good idea to use the exhaust braking system rather than using conventional braking quite often, to enhance the fuel efficiency of the truck.

  1. Turn off when idling:

If you are at a truck stop or waiting for the dispatcher to give the green signal, waiting in the truck by letting it idle for a long time isn’t a good idea. We say this because while idling, the engine consumes around 3 litres of fuel per hour. Therefore, it's best that you switch off the engine.

  1. Check tyre pressure:

Finally, it's always a good idea to keep the tyres inflated to the correct pressure mentioned by OEMs. Low tyre pressure can increase drag and reduce the performance of the truck. The load on the engine also increases which further increases the fuel consumption. Therefore, maintaining the right tyre pressure will help you increase the fuel efficiency of your truck.
