Ashok Leyland, flagship of the Hinduja group, is the 2nd largest manufacturer of commercial vehicles in India, the 4th largest manufacturer of buses in the world, and the 19th largest manufacturer of trucks. Headquartered in Chennai, 9 manufacturing plants gives an international footprint – 7 in India, a bus manufacturing facility in Ras Al Khaimah (UAE), one at Leeds, United Kingdom and a joint venture with the Alteams Group for the manufacture of high-press die-casting extruded aluminium components for the automotive and telecommunications sectors, Ashok Leyland has a well-diversified portfolio across the automobile industry.
In a recent conversation with 91trucks at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025, Mr. Sanjeev Kumar, President of M&HCV Ashok Leyland Group, shared insights into the company’s latest advancements and vision for the future.
Ashok Leyland recently unveiled Garud, India’s first 15-meter, 42-berth sleeper bus with a multi-axle front. This pioneering model is set to transform intercity travel with its enhanced capacity and superior passenger comfort. Currently, only one other player exists in this segment, but Ashok Leyland has spent 3-4 years perfecting Garud to cater to evolving customer needs. Initial trials and customer training have received enthusiastic feedback, reinforcing confidence that this innovation will redefine the long-distance travel experience.
Ashok Leyland stands out as the only Indian manufacturer with a fully modular design for commercial vehicles. The transition to a modular architecture began with BS VI trucks, enabling greater flexibility in managing multiple configurations, reducing inventory at dealerships, and streamlining vehicle customization. This approach ensures that vehicles can be designed, produced, and repaired more efficiently, enhancing the overall customer experience.
Innovation has always been at the core of Ashok Leyland. The company pioneered multi-axle trucks and continues to lead with homegrown technology. Unlike competitors that rely on foreign partnerships, Ashok Leyland remains self-sufficient, developing and manufacturing its own engines. This independence underscores its commitment to Atma Nirbhar Bharat, ensuring indigenous technological advancements drive the company forward.
Recognizing the importance of after-sales service, Ashok Leyland has significantly expanded its service network. From 600 outlets two years ago, the company now has 1,000 service centers, each employing over 100 people. The primary focus has been on strengthening its presence in North and East India, regions previously dominated by competitors. Today, Ashok Leyland has a service footprint in Ladakh and all northeastern states.
To further enhance customer experience, the company is embarking on a Service Excellence Program, aiming to digitize dealership and workshop operations. Currently ranked second in customer satisfaction (CSA), Ashok Leyland is dedicated to becoming the industry leader.
Looking ahead, Ashok Leyland aims to have service workshops at every 50 km along national highways. Understanding diverse customer needs, the company is customizing service models—e-commerce operators require six-hour repairs, while bus drivers prefer nighttime services to avoid operational disruptions. This adaptability ensures superior service delivery across different sectors.
While predicting the future of the industry remains challenging due to India’s dynamic business environment, Ashok Leyland remains committed to bold innovations and new product development. The company continues to explore pioneering solutions that meet evolving market demands.
Reflecting on the company’s 76-year journey, Mr. Kumar emphasized the trust and faith customers have placed in Ashok Leyland. Acknowledging that not every product is a best-seller, he reassured customers of the company's unwavering support and commitment to excellence.
Ashok Leyland’s journey is defined by its pursuit of innovation, customer satisfaction, and technological self-reliance. With its latest advancements and future-oriented strategies, the company is poised to strengthen its position as a leader in India's commercial vehicle industry.
