India’s First Indigenously Developed Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus

Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, Mr.Jitendra Singh launches India’s first indigenously developed hydrogen fuel cell bus. Read on for more info.

According to experts, hydrogen fuel cell buses are believed to be the future of inter-city transit due to their performance and efficiency. Many commercial vehicle manufacturers are looking forward to developing and producing vehicles that are based on hydrogen fuel cells (HFCs) since they produce zero tailpipe emissions and eliminate the costs associated with handling and storing chemicals like battery acid.

Due to the aforementioned characteristics of HFCs, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and private firm KPIT Limited present India’s first indigenously developed hydrogen fuel cell bus. Further, Union Minister Jitendra Singh launches the hydrogen fuel cell bus in India.

As for the vehicle, it uses hydrogen and air to generate electricity which is then utilised for the movement of the bus. Fuel cells basically work in a manner similar to traditional batteries that are found in electric vehicles, however, they do not require to be charged and do not run out of charge as well. By this, we mean that they run as long as there is the presence and supply of Hydrogen.

Furthermore, the Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, Mr.Jitendra Singh later said that the introduction of the bus is a step closer to the Atma Nirbhar since it is a means for sustainable, efficient, affordable and environmentally friendly transportation that creates new entrepreneurs and job opportunities while meeting the climate change goals at a global level.

As mentioned before, the fuel cell-based vehicle generates no harmful emissions, thereby eliminating the risk of affecting the climate and health of people. To make things much more clear for convenience, a single diesel-powered bus emits around 100 tons of CO2 annually. So the amount of destruction caused to the environment is at large since there are over million such buses in the country.

Mr.Singh added that the fuel cells eliminate the need to replace, charge, and manage batteries which means that the operational cost of hydrogen fuel cell buses is lesser than internal combustion-based vehicles. “About 12-14 per cent of CO2 emissions come from diesel-powered heavy vehicles. Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles provide excellent means to eliminate on-road emissions in this sector,” he said.
