India To Get Its First LNG-Powered Trucks Soon Says Iveco's FPT

The globally acclaimed powertrain manufacturing branch of Iveco Group, FPT Industrial and Blue Energy Motors, a zero-emission truck technology company In India have signed an agreement to make what could be India’s first Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) powered trucks. The two companies plan on introducing the LNG-powered,  FPT 6.7-litre engine-equipped trucks in India by the end of 2022.

It is believed that this agreement between the two companies is a step forward in what could be a long-term partnership to build and develop the Indian commercial vehicle market. The brands also believe in influencing the Indian fleet owners into choosing a clean energy alternative for the betterment of total costs of ownership apart from the obvious reduction of carbon emission from IC vehicles. It is also understood that the adoption of LNG technology will become rapid in India considering the stringent emission standards which are equivalent to the Euro VI.

Further, the Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) powered engines will be initially manufactured in FPT Industrial’s Turin, Italy plant which employs more than 2,600 people. In addition to this, the plant also specialises in producing LNG- Medium displacement engines as well.

“We are pleased and proud that Blue Energy Motors has chosen us for this major evolution in Indian commercial transport”, commented Sylvain Blaise, President, Powertrain Business Unit, Iveco Group. “This agreement is of the utmost importance for FPT Industrial, now and in the future, as we want our leading technologies to play a key role to support the ecological transition of one of the world’s largest vehicle markets.”

The announcement comes on a very auspicious occasion, the opening of “BEYOND- Iveco Group Days”, an international event which is organised by the company. It takes place in Turin from 13th to 17th of July. A panel of outstanding speakers will be present at the event to discuss the trends and impact they have on the transport industry.

Nonetheless, the move from the Indian Startup- ‘Blue Energy Motors’ and the well-established ‘Iveco Group’ comes in at a time when the world is looking for an alternative to reduce and bring zero carbon emissions. Although Electric vehicles and Hybrid powertrain-equipped vehicles seem like a good choice, Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) powered engines and trucks are a good alternative for creating cleaner air. However, we need to sit back and wait until the end of 2022 to experience and know the specification and abilities of the trucks that both companies plan on introducing in India.
