Tata Motors, India’s largest commercial vehicle manufacturer, has supplied 100 electric buses to Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC). The buses were launched by the Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma on 1 January 2024.
The zero-emission buses are indigenously built on a next-gen architecture, equipped with the latest features, and are powered by advanced battery systems, said the press release.
Rohit Srivastava, Vice President and Business Head – CV Passengers, Tata Motors, said, “Making public transport more effective and efficient is our mission and we are thankful to the Assam State Government and the ASTC for giving us the opportunity to supply a modern fleet of electric buses. Built with cutting-edge technology and rigorously tested under varied conditions, these buses are eco-friendly and will make public transportation safe, comfortable, tech driven and more efficient.”
To date, Tata Motors has supplied over 1,500 electric buses across multiple cities in India, which have cumulatively clocked more than 10 crore kilometres, with an uptime of over 95%. It is equipped with electronic stability control, electronic brake distribution, air suspension, Intelligent Transport System (ITS) and panic button among other advanced features.
The introduction of Tata Motors' electric buses in the Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) has brought about a significant impact on the environment and a commendable reduction in carbon emissions. This revolutionary shift in public transportation represents a major stride towards a greener and more sustainable future.
One of the most pressing concerns in today's world is the increasing levels of pollution and its detrimental effects on the environment. Traditional buses running on fossil fuels contribute significantly to air pollution, releasing harmful emissions such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter. These pollutants not only pose serious health risks to the population but also contribute to the global climate crisis.

By adopting electric buses, powered by advanced technology and renewable energy, Tata Motors and the ASTC have taken a proactive approach to combat these environmental challenges. Electric buses are powered by electricity, which significantly reduces their carbon footprint compared to their conventional counterparts. With zero tailpipe emissions, these buses help in mitigating air pollution, improving air quality, and ultimately reducing the impact on public health.
In conclusion, the future of electric buses in public transportation is bright and promising. With Tata Motors leading the way in powering the ASTC with their electric buses, we can anticipate a widespread adoption of this sustainable solution in other regions as well. As we embrace this revolution, we move closer to a greener and more efficient public transportation system that benefits both the environment and the commuters.
