Leading and renowned commercial vehicle manufacturer in India, Tata Motors announces that it too has greater plans to make a transition from manufacturing ICE-based pickups to an electric powertrain-equipped pickup fleet production. The brand stated that the transition will begin with the 'Tata Yodha rangeтАЩ which has become quite popular since its introduction. 

In this regard, Rajesh Kaul, Vice President of Sales & Marketing, Commercial Vehicles mentioned that тАЬElectrification of our pickups as part of our overall journey of decarbonisation is a certainty to which we cannot certainly say no to.тАЭ 

Speaking at the launch event of a new range of pickups which included a bi-fuel pickup truck, Rajesh Kaul did not provide an actual timeline as to when the transition will take place and production of electric versions of the Yodha will commence in order to achieve the larger goal of decarbonisation.┬а

However, he did mention that "pickups too will be electrified in due courseтАЭ based on customer requirements and other aspects like rate of infrastructure development, availability of technology etc. "We want our electrification journey to coincide with the development of the ecosystem so that the customer can get the full benefits of lower costs that an EV can offer as against ICE. This will take a while but we are committed to the larger goal," Kaul added.

Further, regarding the possibilities of electrification of the Intra V50 range, he stated that conventional and alternate fuels such as CNG are what they are focusing on right now with regards to the Intra V50 range since the vehicle has the potential to take on hilly and mountainous regions where charging infrastructure is yet to come up.┬а

Also, when asked about the companyтАЩs plans to ramp up the production and deliveries of Tata Ace EV, executive director, Girish Wagh said that deliveries of the vehicle will start from next month onwards. "We are seeing a huge demand for the next round of Ace EVs, but as of now, our focus is to at least deliver 50-60 per cent of our existing order book and only then accept the next round of inquiries."

Finally, Kaul added that Tata Motors is looking at the big picture which is hydrogen internal combustion engine-based vehicles. After its CNG and electrification, H2ICE is believed to be the next step for the company in terms of product development.
